These days there are lots of themed races. There’s often a gimmick. Whether you want a Rock n’ Roll race, or a costume race, a red dress race, or one where you roll around in mud, it can be found.
But this is a blog for people who love to run and love to travel, so it is only fitting that this post features races which take place on runways! Boy was I surprised to see how many runway races there are.
I know, I know…. I bet you want to know if you get miles for running around a runway. Is there First Class? Status? Is this a Mileage Run, you ask? Well, it is, in a sense, but on your feet, not on a plane. However, if you have a smart phone and United flies at the local airport, you might get 50 miles for a check in on Foursquare.
I’ve never run a race on a runway – but after working on this post, I really want to.
One thing is for certain – you never have to worry about hills on runways!
So, here’s the list of some of the runway races I’ve found (feel free to add in more in the comments). Note: there are many other races that go through airports, runways or air force bases – I’ve limited this post to “pure” runway races).

Pretty cool! Will have to add one of these to next year’s line-up. During two of the NC runs, I will actually be up in NY.

Carrie @ Maine Mom on the Run says
The Race the Runways is Maine will be my first half marathon. Last year it was my first 5k! Flat and fast!

I had no idea there was a theme to airport races!!! I did the Inaugural Race the Runways last April in Brunswick, Maine. It was fantastic – 100% flat (actually, a slight downgrade), but windy as all get out – which I can imagine would be like a lot of open area airports! I’ll be doing this race again in 2 weeks.

Nice collection. I also know that there is one at PAE. When I was out there a few weeks back for Aviation Geek Fest I did a tour with the fire department there and the guy was talking about the planning they do for it. Obviously a bit different, but it is still a cool event and one that I’d like to get in on if I am out there.
I’ll be out at the JFK one this year. See you there!
Then again, I don’t actually run (unless chased) so I’m not likely to really get in to it.
