If you know me, you know I like street art. I’m thrilled and often mesmerized by it. I’m not an expert, but I do know of many of the more famous artists (such as Fairey, Kobra, London Police and FAKE) and recognize their works. When I visited Amsterdam in 2016, I took a Street Art Tour.
A few days into our trip to Amsterdam this past December, we decided to take a boat ride to North Amsterdam aka Amsterdam Noord. It’s one of those areas that’s been redeveloped and refurbished, so I wanted to see what it was all about. The ferry leaves from behind Amsterdam’s Centraal Station.
The day was rather cold and nasty, but we were happy to see the NDSM sign. NDSM (Nederlandsche Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij) was a former shipyard.
We didn’t really know what we were going to see there, but then I was immediately drawn to all of the street art. To my surprise and delight, we had happened upon the STRAAT – the Museum for Graffiti and Street Art! I was in street art heaven. We had to go in!
The exhibition is amazing! Here are just a few of the fabulous murals I saw at the STRAAT! Some might be merely whimsical but many have strong messages. It was truly a great day!
