Being a confirmed Jogging Map geek, when I checked into the Hyatt Arlington at Washington’s Key Bridge Hotel last month (for the Marine Corps Marathon), I excitedly asked “May I have a Jogging Map, please?” or perhaps I said “Do you have a Jogging Map?”
I expected something all pretty and glossy, but to my shock, I was handed a piece of paper the size of a business card that said this:
I couldn’t believe my eyes – this flimsy piece of paper is what Hyatt Arlington was passing off as a Jogging Map? But, then I thought about it – if the running trail was so close and easy to get to that all you needed was a slip of paper with written directions saying go right and go left and then you’ll be there, then why would you need more? While I would have preferred just a bit more information, like landmarks and miles, I was OK with this minimalist approach. In fact, I was somewhat transformed by it!
Yes, sometimes simplicity is profound!
Incidentally, the Hyatt Arlington is a perfectly lovely hotel and it is fabulously convenient to Washington D.C. and to both the start and the finish of the Marine Corps Marathon!

Although I grew up on the east coast and used to go to DC and its surrounds often as a kid, I haven’t been in Washington in years and am eager to go back, hopefully someday soon. Regards!
