There are a lot of “themes” in running that do little for me. The electric runs, the color runs, the tomato runs…. sure, you can say that, if its fun and it gets people off their butts, then its OK. And I agree. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to pay money to roll around in the mud, or have color powders shot onto me or to run away from Zombies gone amok.
This is different! This is advancement. This is interesting.
A self-powered gym where your own workout generates the electricity! You keep the lights on!!
Where: Congresbury, near Bristol in the UK
The hotel: The Cadbury House, a Doubletree by Hilton Hotel.
The equipment: ARTIS (Art in Motion), supplied by Technogym
As reported in the UK Daily Mail:
A British gym has become the first in the world to harness the energy of its users to generate its own electricity.
Bikes, cross trainers and ‘vario’ machines at Cadbury House in Congresbury, near Bristol will each feed around 100w per hour back into the building’s power supply.
The new treadmills will also use 30 per cent less electricity and generate enough energy to power their own information screens.

This is pretty cool, and I agree – you’d think this would have been done before, but the technology was probably cost-prohibitive to install in most gyms. A luxury hotel (which will typically have smaller facilities than a full-service gym), though, makes sense. I wonder what the ROI is on those machines…
