I just got home from a week in Mérida, the capital city of the Mexican state of Yucatan.
We stayed at the Hyatt Regency Mérida.
Our stay was a combination of exploration and relaxation.
We explored the charming city, we strolled on the grand avenue known as Paseo de Montejo, we went for a one day tour of Mayan ruins (Uxmal) and we swam in a breathtaking cenote (Cenotes Hacienda Mucuyche).
We also spent plenty of time, just hanging around the vicinity of the hotel and swimming in the hotel pool.
Honestly, I don’t know where the seven days went to – I definitely could have stayed longer.
Staff at the hotel were helpful and warm. (I tried making use of my 210 days of Duolingo Spanish lessons, but it wasn’t always easy – – maybe I need to return for a language immersion class?). As a Globalist, I received an upgrade to a Regency Executive suite, which is a premium suite, on the 17 floor. Here is a short video tour of the suite:
The suite had everything we could ask for (except for towel hooks in the bathroom). We were really comfortable here. Here are some photos:
The main bathroom had both a shower (with good water pressure!) and a bathtub with jacuzzi-like features (I didn’t take a bath, so I can’t say how good it was). There was also a second small bathroom at the entrance to the suite.
This was the view from our suite:
The Regency Club:
The Regency Club was also on the 17th floor, but it was essentially closed during our stay (except for the last night). It was open to the extent you could use the coffee machine and grab some peanuts or danish. I believe the reason why the Regency Club was essentially closed was due to low occupancy.
Instead of breakfast in the Regency Club, we had complimentary breakfast in the main hotel restaurant, Peregrini, and, in the evening, drinks and hor d’oeuvres were served in the hotel Lobby Bar. However, on the last night the Regency Club was open for happy hour.
Breakfast was a full buffet containing both Mexican and western items. There was everything from classic Mexican dishes to fruit and yogurt to meats and cheeses to freshly-made omelettes. The selection of hot dishes was different every day.
Evenings in the Lobby Bar were very enjoyable. In my experience at other Regency Clubs or Grand Clubs, the happy hour is for two hours, but here it was for three hours! The list of included beverages was somewhat limited, but we didn’t mind.
I enjoyed the wine and Dave enjoyed the Dos Equis beer – and we were fine with the Jimador Tequila. The waiter was friendly and poured and refilled the drinks in lightening speed. However, the food was hit or miss.
As mentioned above, happy hour was held in the Regency Club on the final night of our stay.
The fitness center is on the third floor, the same floor as the pool. It is clean and has many good Life Fitness machines. Of course, I’d be thrilled if they could add a Peloton bike and a rowing machine.
I’ve always wanted to visit Mérida and this hotel in particular and I’m glad I did. I’ve said many times that my motto is affordable luxury, and honestly, this hotel, (a World of Hyatt category 1 hotel), is a steal, especially as a Globalist. I would love to return – soon!
You know you’re in a special place when you feel like you are leaving friends when you check out. Thanks to everyone at the hotel – including, but not limited to Debbie (front desk), Carlos and Rafael (Lobby Bar) and Esther and Ruby (Business Center).

My wife and I stayed there a couple of years back and similarly enjoyed ourselves. The club lounge was open at night which was quite pleasant. The only real negative was that the pool was small.
