On my recent trip to Madrid, Spain, I spent four nights at the Thompson Madrid and two nights at the InterContinental Madrid. Though both hotels are located in Madrid, they are in very different neighborhoods. (see, Overview, Our Thanksgiving Trip to Madrid)
The InterContinental Madrid is located on Paseo de la Castellana, in Madrid’s business and cultural center. The location is not as touristic and crowded as the city center; I liked the area and I would have liked to have explored it more.
Our stay was complimentary, because both Dave and I have the Chase IHG Mastercard which includes an annual free night.
Like other InterContinental hotels that I’ve been to, the InterContinental Madrid is sophisticated and rich in old world charm and splendor.
The entry to the hotel and the lobby are both lovely, with plenty of space and seating. Our visit was in December – the Christmas Tree was beautiful!
To the right of the lobby area is a beautiful dark wood bar. We enjoyed cocktails there one evening.
Our room was very nice – I would describe it as a large king or a junior suite. There was both a bedroom area and a living room area. It was elegantly decorated and furnished (though I generally prefer modern decor).
We always appreciate an espresso machine in the room!
In the room, there was bottled water as well as a nice welcome note and a bottle of sparkling wine.
There was a full minibar in the room. As always, I asked housekeeping to remove everything from the minibar that is for sale.
The view? Umm, no.
The bathroom was old fashioned, but well appointed and the toiletries were by L’Occitane.
As a Diamond Elite IHG member (my status was recently elevated thanks to a promotion a few months ago), breakfast was included in our stay. I really enjoyed it. The buffet included a wide assortment of fresh fruits, cheeses, meats, salads, pastries and hot food items, all of which was delicious.
The fitness center was large and clean and filled with state-of-the-art equipment.
There is nothing not to like about the InterContinental. The staff is attentive and helpful, and the common areas and the rooms are clean and luxurious. My motto is Affordable Luxury, and this stay certainly qualifies as that!
