I visited Hyatt Place Kyoto in March of this year (see Review, to be posted shortly). All of the stars aligned for this stay: the price was right, the location good, the were rooms new and clean, and the breakfast was great.
I mean REALLY GREAT! With the exception of the runny eggs, everything was delicious and fresh.
They even had gold chopsticks (I may or may not now have a set of these at home).
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the wonderful soups: the clam chowder and the cream of potato were both phenomenal.
I just learned that, effective August 1st, the free breakfast was eliminated for all guests except World of Hyatt Globalist members.
The website says this:
Closing of breakfast benefits of Hyatt Place
2023/7/27
The price for breakfast, for all guests other than Globalists, is now 2,600 Yen (a little over $17). (I’m not aware of the price for children). Yes, the breakfast is worth every yen being charged, in my opinion, but that is not the point – or maybe it is the point, I’m not sure.
Frankly, I’ve never heard of a Hyatt Place charging World of Hyatt members for breakfast, have you?
What do you think of this?

The lovely Hyatt Place in Krakow does the same. I’m a Globalist so it didn’t affect me directly but I thought it was distasteful considering that free breakfast is one of the hallmarks of the brand.

I haven’t read the terms and conditions in detail, but I think that only US Hyatt Places are required to provide free breakfast. I agree with you that it does seem like a watering down of the brand. (and I’m a globalist too).

That’s my understanding too. HP East London was the same, which is where I first learned about that distinction, as I wasn’t a Globalist when I stayed there earlier in the year. Just spent a night at HP Kyoto and saw the sign at the front desk, but I am a Globalist now.

ugh how annoying. going there next year. and not a globalist.

I suppose if the breakfast offering exceeds the standards, then that’s somewhat understandable. Truth is most Hyatt Places will not raise their breakfast standards to a point where charging for it is normal, so I suppose it’s not likely a big deal.

Maybe you shouldn’t have stolen the chopsticks.
