There are two Thompson Hotels in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, the Main House and the Beach House.
They are a short walk from one another, with very different vibes, but they are commonly owned and managed.
I’ve stayed (twice) at the Beach House property (and toured the Main House property) and really liked the hotels! The Beach House experience might not be as fancy as one might expect from a Thompson Hotel, but this is why I loved it. Our stay was so personal, comfortable and enjoyable (and the tequila was damn good too!). See – Hotel Review: Thompson Beach House, Playa Del Carmen, Mexico)
As I said in the above review:
We loved the Beach House. It was so relaxing and comforting. It is upscale and nicely decorated, but it retains the chill atmosphere that so many upscale properties are lacking. In addition, the hotel staff is incredible. When it comes to hotel hospitality, the little things are big things, if you know what I mean. I would return in a heartbeat.
About a week ago, it came to my attention that both of the hotels are presently closed. The notice on the Hyatt website states this:
Important Notice
Thompson Playa del Carmen Beach House and Thompson Playa del Carmen Main House have temporarily suspended operations due to unexpected, required maintenance work and are expected to resume normal hotel operations on or around November 15, 2024. Guests with existing reservations for stays before November 15 have the option to stay at a nearby Hyatt property instead or cancel their reservation with no penalty. Thank you for your understanding. If you have questions or require assistance, please contact us.
After the recent announcement that a Thompson property in Los Angeles was moving to Marriott, people were naturally concerned that this might be the case with this Thompson property as well. Others theorized that the maintenance may be required due to hurricane damage. I asked around, but didn’t learn anything about the closures.
So, today, I was researching hotels in the Playa Del Carmen area under the Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts website and I came across a listing for a Hyatt Centric in Playa Del Carmen.
Welp, this sure looks like the Thompson Main House! I didn’t remember an announcement of a Hyatt Centric, so I did a little more research. On TripAdvisor, the listing for the Thompson Main House is now renamed the Hyatt Centric Downtown House.
This supports the theory that the Thompson Main House is becoming a Hyatt Centric hotel. The sophisticated, upscale vibe of the Main House definitely matches that of a Hyatt Centric, so I think that a rebranding might be a good move. (Of course, we do not know yet what World of Hyatt category will be assigned . . . .)
And what about the Thompson Beach House? Since the two hotels were always run as sister properties, I would not be surprised if it is rebranded something like the Hyatt Centric Beach House. Regardless, I hope it stays with World of Hyatt. It is a gem.
UPDATE – from the looks of this Facebook Page, it seems clear that both of the Thompson properties are becoming Hyatt Centric!!!
My only gripe is the fitness center – please renovate it – and add Peloton bikes!

I just got back from Playa last night. I had looked at booking one of these weeks back when I decided to go but both were “unavailable” and somewhere I think I read they were closed for maintenance. I did walk by both during my time there and there were definitely lights on and what looked like some life. Did not try entering either.
