The Grand Hyatt New York at Grand Central Station shut down along with most NYC hotels in or around March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown. It never reopened and I was doubting that it would especially in light of the planned demolition and redevelopment of the hotel from the ground up.
However, today Hyatt officially announced that the Grand Hyatt was being rebranded as a Hyatt hotel and would reopen on November 1, 2021. It will remain a category 5 hotel.
Hyatt further announced that the redevelopment plan is going forward, and that, at this time, the plan is that the hotel would close for such redevelopment no earlier than 2023.
I am informed that there will be no club level rooms or hotel club offered. This is unfortunate, as the hotel, when it was a Grand Hyatt had a club lounge that guests enjoyed for evening cocktails and appetizers.
Yes, I’m surprised. Are you?

Is it possible that there is a rent/tax obligation even if the property remains empty?
