American Express has a limited time offer of 35,000 bonus Starpoints on both the business and the personal Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) cards.
This offer seems to come around once per year. It’s a fabulous deal because of the versatility of the Starpoints. Both offers specifically provide that the welcome bonus offer is not available to applicants who have or have had this product, but if you’ve had the personal card but not the business version, you can apply for the business version and receive the welcome bonus, or vice-versa.
The primary benefit of course is that you can redeem Starpoints for free nights at Starwood brand hotels (or transfer the points to Marriott for free nights at Marriott brand hotels).
Even if you don’t stay at SPG properties, these cards are valuable because of the SPG® Airline Transfer Program – where you receive a 5,000 Starpoint® bonus when you transfer 20,000 Starpoints to one of 30 participating frequent flyer programs (most transfer 1:1). Thus, for example, if you transfer 20,000 points to Delta, you will receive 25,000 Delta Skymiles.
Among other things, both cards have no foreign transaction fees, and free in-room internet.
For full terms and benefits, see each of the links to each SPG Amex card.

The business version has some additional attractive features, including complimentary access to Sheraton Club lounges. I recently applied for the business SPG Amex even though I knew that I would not receive the welcome bonus points (since I’d previously had this card) because I wanted lounge access at the Sheraton in Lisbon, Portugal (see, Round Two of the Starwood Business Amex Card!). I actually like this card a lot, and have been putting a lot of my everyday spend on it.
Some other benefits include:
- Free Boingo Wi-Fi
- 5 nights and 2 stays towards SPG Elite status each year
- Free cards for authorized users
