Into each life some rain must fall (The Rainy Day by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow).
This week, we planned a three-night staycation at Hotel Nyack, a JdV by Hyatt hotel. This is our third stay, having been there in 2021 (see review) and 2022 (see review). It is just close enough, yet just far enough from Manhattan, and it has an outdoor pool, making it a perfect summer getaway.
Our stay began on Sunday. We knew it was supposed to rain so we left NYC and headed to the Hudson Valley a little bit on the early side. I guess we picked a bad week to visit the Hudson Valley. The rain did not start coming down hard until we were on the Mario Cuomo bridge just a few miles from the hotel. We had no idea that the rain would pound for hours on end on and off throughout the day in a historical and catastrophic manner.
At check-in, I was told that we’d been upgraded to a King deluxe room but not to a suite. I found this surprising since there were suites available, and I had in fact stayed in a suite on my prior visit last year. The clerk told me that the hotel had recently redesignated all of the hotel suites as premium suites and therefore they were ineligible for Globalist upgrades. (Ugh). After discussing the matter further, the clerk graciously assigned a very nice suite on the top floor of the hotel (the fourth floor) with two bathrooms and a balcony. As you can see, the decor has a boutique/industrial charm to it with very high ceilings (this became more relevant later that evening). Strangely, the hotel did not have luggage racks. Other than that, they were very accommodating.
The rain did not relent, or when it did, it started up soon after seemingly even stronger than before. We stayed around the hotel, had drinks and dinner at the hotel restaurant, FARM.
That night, I was awoken at about 2 a.m. by sounds on the rooftop. Then, I started feeling scattered drops or sprays of water. Well, guess what? The room had sprung a leak. The wall and window shade was wet, and there were puddles on the floor. We were scared of possible electrical issues so we unplugged everything on that side of the room.
I called the front desk at 5 a.m. and the night clerk came right up and gave us keys to another suite. It just so happened that it was the same suite we were in last year, a very nice ADA accessible corner-suite.
(Note: I am aware that what I encountered was nothing compared to the horrific loss of life, flooding and property damages in places such as Orange County, New York and Vermont).
The hotel was extremely apologetic about the room issue. The hotel offered to add 20,000 points to my account (which I accepted) and also sent a bottle of wine to the room with a lovely note.
I like the hotel restaurant, FARM. The servers were very attentive, and the food was locally sourced and very good, but the service can be painfully slow at times. I did like that you could have breakfast until 2 pm!
As a Globalist, I was given a voucher for complimentary breakfast for us for each day of our stay.
This is the lunch and dinner menu.
The hotel pool is great. It got crowded some days, but overall, we really enjoyed it.
I was sad that the hotel gym had not been renovated. It needs a complete overhaul. Instead of working out in the gym, I walked at least an hour or two each morning and explored the scenery in and around the town of Nyack.
Notwithstanding the gym and the flooding, I still love the hotel. It is close to Manhattan but feels light-years away, the price is reasonable (even though the hotel has gone from a category 2 to a category 3 Hyatt), the design and vibe of the hotel is elegant-industrial-shabby chic, and the staff couldn’t be more kind and helpful.
