The New York Times Travel Show, held at the Javits Convention Center every year in January (except 2021, of course) was one of my favorite events of the year. Fridays were devoted to media, and the event opened to the public for the weekend.
I always looked forward to the NY Times Travel Show weekends – there were parties, meet and greets, seminars, promotions and so much more. It was always special.
I was horrified this morning to learn that the New York Times not only canceled the 2022 show, but they discontinued the Travel Show entirely. The website states:
After 17 wonderful years, The New York Times has made the decision to discontinue the Travel Show . . .
I am both surprised and saddened by this news. Have you been to the NY Times Travel Show?

From an economics perspective, it doesn’t seem to make sense to cancel a travel show in a year when travel is experiencing unprecedented demand.

Love the show. Have attended for 16+ yrs. Always used for research for future trips.
Economics, internet etc can all be blamed for the death of the show.

I guess many exhibitors didn’t see increased bookings generated from the show and decided to use their budgets on other promotions. It was fun while it lasted but it ran its course.

I’ll miss it. I wonder if also the Javits had to raise trade show fees to make for last year’s losses.

This is sad news for the travel industry. I have great memories attending the NY Times Travel Show over the years. In a tough year for the travel industry, more tourism boards and brands have gotten used to promoting locations and tours exclusively online. I wonder what will happen in the future with events like WTM in London, which is the world’s biggest English speaking travel show. It was held virtually in 2020.
