I’ve talked about credit card retention calls and offers in the past. Briefly stated, shortly before payment for a credit card annual fee is due, I often call the credit card company to see if there’s any incentive to keep the card rather than to cancel it.
I generally call whether I intend to keep or cancel the card. I don’t say I’m going to cancel the card outright, rather I say I want to explore my options or that I’m considering whether keeping the card is beneficial to me.
This is exactly what I did the other day – I called Chase regarding my Chase Sapphire Reserve card as the annual fee of $550 had arrived on my statement. After a nice conversation with Monique, I asked if there was a retention offer so as to make the fee more palatable. She came back saying she could offer a statement credit of $150. I happily said yes.
But it didn’t end there. I was doing so well with Monique, I asked if she could check on another card for me – the World of Hyatt card, which has an annual fee of $95. She checked and informed me that she could offer a statement credit of $50.
YES!
I decided to try for a trifecta with my IHG card, but there was no offer on that one.
A few years ago, Chase was handing out similar statement credits, but it was a battle to get it honored and applied (see, e.g., I Finally Got the $250 Chase Promised Me). However, this time around, the statement credits appeared on my account within two days of my phone call!
Retention offers such as this are highly targeted, which made me pause before posting this – however, I told a few friends about my experience, and some of them called and received comparable offers, so I figured I’d share. Let me know your experience!

Thanks for sharing your experience! It’s great to hear that others were able to receive similar offers. Retention offers can definitely vary, so it’s helpful to know what worked for you. Looking forward to hearing more about others’ experiences!
