I’m leaving for a trip today, and, BANG, like clockwork, two days ago I started feeling a sore throat. Yesterday, I must have sneezed about a million times. By last night, when it was time to pack, there were tissues all over the place, my head hurt and the congestion raged. Today, my voice is quite sexy. Luckily for me, when I get sick, I get better quickly, so no need to worry.
I’ve been meaning to ask this question since a few weeks ago when I fell during a trail run and had to go shopping for neosporin and large bandaids.
My question is what’s in your first aid kit when you travel? Do you have a first aid kit? (I know today, I’ll throw some extra cold products in my toiletries bag, but I usually do travel with some cold and allergy meds even when I’m not starting out sick).
I have another question: what’s the best product to take when you go on a plane with a cold in order to avoid that horrible ear pain?

good old fashioned chewing gum works for me

i carry enough to get me through a long flight or a long weekend when shops might be closed and that’s about it. i figure i can buy most things on location if needed. so, in general: dozen or so cough drops. 3 or 4 psuedaphed. half dozen band aids (plasters). 2 or 3 imodium. couple dozen cipro pills. perscription eyedrops for an iritis flare-up that troubles me rarely. couple dozen tylonel or such.

I always travel with Benadryl or Claritin to combat allergies. For a cold? That’s a toughie. I like ginger chews b/c the spice helps clear my sinuses. I also use Emergen-C powder packs to help fight the virus. Are you traveling to a race? If so, be sure to chug plenty of water along with your cold medicine. I had to drop out of the Savannah Marathon last year due to kidney pain, I assume brought on by too many meds. Good luck!

Thanks April! I was pretty sick the first few days of my vacation – and the flight was painful on my ears. I took lots of Nyquil and Dayquils. Now, its just a cough.I do bring Emergen-C with me too. I wasn’t traveling for a race – just a vacation in the Pacific Northwest. That’s horrid that you had to drop out of a marathon because of the meds. That’s a whole other topic – how many meds to take when running.
