American Airlines has issued a new press release detailing the latest steps regarding the breakup of the AA alliance with JetBlue Airways entitled Northeast Alliance update for customers. It states:
FORT WORTH, Texas — American Airlines and JetBlue have begun to work through the initial steps to wind down the pro-competitive, pro-consumer Northeast Alliance. These steps include:
- Codeshare flights between American and JetBlue will no longer be available for sale starting July 21.
- Customers will have through July 20 to update any existing American booking with a TrueBlue member number or an existing JetBlue booking with an AAdvantage member number.
- AAdvantage members can use their AAdvantage miles to book and ticket an award itinerary on JetBlue through July 20.
This is just the first step in the wind-down process that will take place over the coming months. We will continue to work with the JetBlue team to ensure customers who have existing codeshare bookings can travel seamlessly without disruption to their travel plans.
So, July 20th seems to be a pivotal date. After that date, you can no longer purchase or book award flights on codeshare flights between AA and Jetblue. Also, July 20th will be the last day to update which airline you’d like to credit an existing booking to.
JetBlue has issued an analogous press release, stating:
As the next step in the process, JetBlue and American are implementing the following:
-
Beginning July 21, 2023, JetBlue customers will no longer be able to book new codeshare bookings on American Airlines and vice versa.
-
For customers with travel already booked, TrueBlue or AAdvantage numbers will need to be added to the booking before July 21, 2023 in order to earn points, tiles and reciprocal perks.
-
Customers can accrue TrueBlue points for all tickets purchased prior to July 21, 2023, as long as their TrueBlue number is added to the booking before July 21, 2023.
Personally, I’m sad to see the end of this alliance, especially with the expansion of JetBlue into Europe. How do you feel about it?
