In hotel fitness and running news, Marriott has announced the new partnership between its Residence Inn by Marriott Hotels and the running app Map My Run from Under Armour Connected Fitness.
As someone who loves to go for runs when traveling, I really like this idea. Marriott has a special link on its website “RI Run Like a Local” (I must need more coffee because it took me a few minutes to realize that RI stands for Residence Inn). Through links to MapMyFitness, the Run Like a Local website offers curated running routes all over the world, or at least near the 700 Residence Inn properties located in the United States, Canada, Europe, the Middle East and Central America. This is phenomenal!
I looked at the running routes for the various Residence Inns in NYC, and they were good and accurate. Plus, the websites were easy to navigate. Here, for example is the info for a downtown Manhattan run.
The routes are available on both the website and through the MapMyRun App for iPhone and Android.
While hotel fitness centers are important, there is nothing like exploring a location by foot. This is what I try to do wherever I go and it is such an important part of my travel experience. Here’s what the Press Release said, in part:
The curated running routes provide an outdoor workout alternative, so guests can maximize their found time and keep up their fitness routines during long stays away from home.

“Our mission is to empower athletes everywhere and through this partnership and our fitness tracking apps and websites, we can provide personalized workout recommendations to Residence Inn guests, encouraging them to stay active even while traveling,” said Warren Kay, Vice President, Advertising for Under Armour Connected Fitness.
This is a fabulous resource and incentive to get out and run (or walk) whether for pure fitness or to get out and see the sights of a city (instead of just hopping on and off a tourist bus)!
