As I wrote about recently, I received a fabulous offer from Barclays Bank with respect to my US Airways Dividend Miles Mastercard. Specifically, I was offered 15,000 bonus miles for spending $500 or more in new purchases with my card each month for October, November and December. The only catch, I noted, was that the $89 renewal fee was due in October. I surmised that, in light of the above offer, Barclays Bank would not be willing to waive the $89 renewal fee.
I WAS WRONG!!
My motto, when it comes to matters like this, is IT NEVER HURTS TO ASK.
I picked up the phone and called the number on the back of my US Airways card. I told the agent that I had received a bill for the renewal fee and wanted to explore my options (meaning: can you waive the fee or give me miles?) The agent was very cordial and connected me with a senior representative.
I was immediately offered a waiver of the $89 renewal fee. I was floored! It didn’t stop there. We chit-chatted a bit, and the agent then offered me an additional 10,000 bonus miles if I spent $3,000 within the next 90 days. I was shocked! I of course accepted this, and made sure this offer did not negate the prior 15,000 miles offer.
The agent then asked me if my $12,000 credit line was sufficient and if I wanted to increase that. I was so flustered, that I said no (DUMB!)
So, what began as what I thought would be a futile call, ended with a waiver of the $89 renewal fee and a bonus of 10,000 miles! And the agents I spoke to were as nice as can be!
I would say that was 15 minutes well spent, wouldn’t you?

Yes! Man you’re a charmer! What did you chit chat about?

Great to know! I need to have my SO call in about his Arrivals card since the fee just hit. I have a feeling they might not be as generous….

Tried to get my Arrival fee waived or some bonus offer and all I was offered was a card downgrade. Very disappointing treatment from my current favorite card.

Karen, I haven’t had Arrival long enough to ask for a fee waiver. It’s such a good card, that I would probably keep it regardless.
