Prior to the merger of American Airlines and US Airways, Barclays Bank would frequently run promotions on the US Airways Mastercard whereby a cardholder could earn bonus points for a moderate spend over a few month period. I am happy to see that Barclays Bank has just announced a similar promotion with the US Airways successor card, the AAdvantage Aviator Red MasterCard.
In a nutshell:
If I spend $500 or more in new purchases each calendar month in October, November and December, I’ll earn 15,000 bonus miles.
I love the simplicity of this offer! It is a targeted offer, but the fact that I’ve received it today means you might receive it tomorrow or next week or next month.

This has been going around for many years. It’s nothing new and completely random as to who is targeted.

Thank you so much for your comment. I haven’t seen much of these offers since the US Airways cards were re-branded as AAdvantage Aviator Cards.

Could you share when your annual fee is due to hit on this card? Last year Barclays sent me a similar offer on my Arrival+ a month before my annual fee was to be charged, so requiring me to keep the card for two months after the fee hit before I received the bonus. Just curious if your annual fee is coming up in the next couple months. Thanks!

actually, I’m not even sure. I’ll have to check. I don’t even think I ever activated the card! The same thing happened to me last year with the US Airways card, and I thought it must be a ploy to have me renew it. But then I called, and got a retention offer for the renewal fee. I was rather surprised.

I haven’t received either offer yet, and I use that card regularly. Maybe that’s why? They are targeting others not using it as much? How do they decide who to offer it to? Thanks….

Participated on previous 2 promotions, never saw the points posted.

did you call Barclays?

Got the 15,000 mile offer emailed yesterday. Annual fee due next week, and I called a couple weeks ago and got no offers. Total first year spending was $1,100, and $1,000 of that was for a 5,000 mile offer extended when I opened the account. I planned to downgrade to the no-fee version, since I find Barclay’s to be opaque generally and especially unpredictable about posting earned miles to customer accounts. Took five months for the 5,000 bonus miles to post. But, at what’ll be about $6.66 per 1,000 miles for me, I’ll probably at least call and find out who tracks the bonus miles and just how long it’s supposed to take to get paid. I got three of these cards last year when they were handing them out like Halloween candy, so how this one works will probably dictate what I do as the other two reach first-year expiration.
