In my post yesterday, I stated that I have bought Vanilla Reload Cards at various 7-Eleven Stores in Manhattan with credit cards.
I also mentioned that some 7-Eleven stores are coded by Visa as Gas Stations, even though they may be retail stores.
How did I know that?
Visa has a detailed system where each merchant’s business is categorized by a specific code. You can research it at the Visa Supplier Locator Search.
You can search by name, address or fleet. Fill in the required information, and the search will show you stores that meet your search and a code. Upon inquiry, I learned that each of the 7-Eleven stores I shopped at are coded as a service station, once again disproving the rule that “if it looks like a duck, it must be a duck.”

Have you tried this? I bought a drink at the 7-11 as an experiment, and it coded as a convenience store charge, even though this database shows 7-11 as a gas station. I wonder if the gas station coding is only for purchases at the pump, while in-store purchases are coded differently? Please provide ore details of how the charge goes through. Thank you!

I think the idea to try at a 7-11 without a gas station. That way there is only one point of sale and coding.
