Visiting New York City? Afraid to take a ride in the NYC Subway? Don’t be! Besides being one of the most economical and often convenient ways to get around, it is often an experience to behold. There’s plenty of excellent subway art and many musical performers. There’s even a program sponsored by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority that promotes musical performances in the subways called Music Under New York. (Of course, exercise normal precautions when riding the subway system as you would in most any other city: be aware of your surroundings, watch your possessions, don’t travel late at night, etc…)
I travel the subway system often so I recognize many of the subway performers. But, just this weekend, on Saturday at the bustling 14th Street, Union Square Subway Station, I was treated to something entirely new to me – a really incredible ONE MAN BAND performance by a musician named Jeff aka @OneManNoise!
I watched with amazement as this performer was setting up his massive mess of equipment attaching strings to his arms and legs. And then he began singing and performing. This was great!! Here he is singing Stand by Me:
Since it is December, he followed with some Christmas tunes:
This show was totally fun and memorable!
I also see this drummer on the platform of the 4, 5 and 6 trains at this same station quite often. He plays for hours on buckets and his talent rivals any top drummer I’ve ever seen!
So, be sure to take some time to take in some of the subway performances whether you are visiting or live in New York City!
