Today is my 10 year anniversary, and what’s the most romantic thing I did all morning? Yes, I booked a round trip flight to Maui over Presidents’ Week 2019 for $430 per person! Flights were as low as $370 for the same dates, but I wanted the 9 pm departure home.
There are cheap flights from many cities to Honolulu (HNL) and Maui (OGG). From Newark, the HNL flights are primarily on American and the OGG flights are on United. I went to Google Flights and played around with the dates. My boyfriend is a teacher, so it’s often difficult to find flight availability during school holidays, but I was able to find flights during Presidents’ Week.
I booked through the American Express travel portal and paid with my American Express Platinum Card so I will get 5X Membership Reward Points.
I booked three nights at the Hyatt Regency in Kaanapali on points (the Andaz is too expensive and not available on points).
I was in Maui quite a few years ago to run the Maui Marathon, and have been wanting to return.
I hear you gasping – flying to Hawaii in coach? I know many who are not willing to do that, but I am.
So what did you do this morning?

3 days in Maui? Coming from Newark? Your going to spend 24 hr traveling round trip on a 72 hours vacation, to a destination with a 6 hour time difference? I travel PHL-HNL with my family on a yearly bases for a minimal of 14 days, my wife and I are both school principals so this is possible, but I think less than 5 full days in Hawaii, coming from the East coast , is not worth it.

Yup, it’s a quick turnaround, but I’m used to it (I’ve done equally short trips to Hong Kong and other similarly distant cities). It’s a function of our work schedules as well as the flight prices and availability. I’m actually hoping that between now and next February, United makes some change to the itinerary which will enable us to change a flight to get an extra day.
