I recently stayed one night at the Kimpton Eventi Hotel in New York City. I had an expiring free night certificate from my Chase IHG card, and a staycation at a local Kimpton hotel appealed to me. (There was an issue with Legionella bacteria having been detected in the hotel water. That topic is discussed in a separate post, entitled I Stayed at a NYC Hotel that Tested Positive for Legionella Bacteria.)
I’ve been at the Eventi for many events, but I haven’t stayed there since 2014 when I had a really nice stay there (see, Hotel Review). Check in at the hotel was easy. We were greeted and informed that we had been upgraded to a suite.
The suite was attractive, comfortable and well-designed.
There was a mini-bar (as usual, I asked if housekeeping could remove the retail items from the refrigerator).
The bedroom was also well-designed. There were night tables on either side of the bed, and there were sufficient outlets.
The robes were by Frette and had hoods!
There was a smart tablet on one night table, which had answers to every question you could imagine about the room and the hotel. In addition, it offered books to read, plants in your room to keep you company under the Plant Pals program (!) and a link where you can borrow accessories for free via Kimpton’s recent collaboration with Anthropologie (which incidentally happens to be a favorite store of mine).
The bathroom was modern with double sinks, and a bath and shower. (As I explained in the related post, we did not use the bath or shower so I can’t report on the water pressure or the overall bathing experience).
This was the view of New York City from our window.
The Kimpton wine hour was held in the lobby of the hotel. It was fine and always appreciated.
The hotel gym is spacious and clean with good air and light and offers everything you can imagine – including two Peloton bikes (yay!).
As an IHG Diamond Elite member, Breakfast was included in my stay.
I was excited that I would be dining at the hotel’s L’Amico Restaurant.
We were seated and handed the breakfast menu which was very nice and offered quite a few dishes that interested me.
However, when I handed the “Diamond Elite” breakfast voucher to the waitperson, he snapped away the main menu saying it wasn’t for us. He instead handed us a card which was no larger than a playing card and offered only two very limited choices for Diamond Elite breakfast. We chose the “American Breakfast.”
This was a far cry from the items listed on the original breakfast menu. This choice didn’t even include a piece of bacon or sausage.
But wait it gets worse!! The breakfast did not even include toast or a piece of bread! Seriously. I asked the waitperson and he said NO.
When I visited the hotel in 2014, the breakfast was a beautiful buffet in a garden or greenhouse-like setting.
As you can tell, I feel that the breakfast offered to Diamond Elite guests is stingy, insulting and unacceptable.
Other than the breakfast (and the Legionella bacteria which the hotel has taken diligent steps to remediate) the hotel is solid. The employees are genuinely warm and helpful. Also, I should note that the hotel is very well located – and in walking distance to many neighborhoods whether it is Chelsea, Times Square, midtown or downtown.
