I recently vacationed at the Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen Resort in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The hotel is quite new and ever since I heard that it was being built, I wanted to go there. The hotel lived up to my expectations and more. It is modern, spacious, open-air and the design is simply stunning.
An added plus is that Playa del Carmen is so easy to get to from New York! As someone who is known to spend days traveling to Asia or India or even Africa and stay for only a few days, it is a pleasure to travel to a location where I can leave New York in the morning and fly to Cancun and be on a beautiful beach (or poolside drinking a cocktail) in a foreign country in the afternoon!
I am also drawn to Playa del Carmen because it still has so much local charm and culture. While the Grand Hyatt is a spectacularly secluded mecca of a resort, you can also walk out the door and be on the vibrant main streets of Playa del Carmen in literally a minute. Literally. I really enjoy that balance.
As a Diamond Hyatt Gold Passport member, I had access to the Grand Club for breakfast and cocktails. Also, I used a Diamond Suite Upgrade for my stay. The check-in process was done in the Club, and we were then escorted to our room.
We walked into our suite, and a thoughtful card, a bottle of bubbly, and roses adorned a table in the living room! Prior to our arrival, I informed hotel management that my boyfriend and I were celebrating our anniversary that month (we really were). The suite was magnificent! There was a full living room area, a bedroom, a bathroom and a balcony.
The bedroom was modern and sleek and extremely comfortable. I loved the woven turquoise headboard! And, there were more anniversary decorations!
My favorite hotel rooms are ones facing the water. It is magical waking up to the sight and sound of an ocean.
The balcony was great, although unfortunately we were unable to use it do to an outbreak of grasshoppers in Playa del Carmen during the time of our stay.
The bathroom was larger than many hotel rooms I’ve seen. Heck, it was bigger than some New York City apartments!
The toiletries were deliciously scented with lemongrass. There was even a mosquito repellent spray.
The closets and safe were inside the bathroom area.
As a Hyatt Diamond amenity, we received a small bottle of mescal with a personalized welcome note. This began our love for this smooth, smoky liquor!
We spent time both on the beach and by the pool.
The Grand Club was one of the nicest I’ve ever been to. We had breakfast there in the morning and cocktails and appetizers each evening.
Breakfast included a full array of meats and cheeses, as well as freshly baked pastries, fresh fruit and juices as well as hot items:
Evening cocktails featured a full tequila and mescal bar and other beverages too, as well as a delicious selection of appetizers. We could have easily skipped dinner, but there were restaurants in Playa that we wanted to discover.
If all that wasn’t enough, how about some pie?
The staff at the hotel was also amazing. They were always there for us and always extremely gracious and helpful.
What more can I say? As much as I love going to new places, I can see myself returning here time and time again.
I like Mexico and want to keep returning. Please don’t build walls.
