Anyone who’s had an Amex card for a while will remember the good old Amex Shop Small days. You might even feel a warm fuzzy feeling just thinking about it. I do! Usually, Shop Small was on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and it was designed to promote spending at small participating businesses. At it’s best, it was spend $10, get a $10 credit – in other words, totally free money. Since all of the spend had to be on that one day, I went running around to all of my favorite stores and restaurants and purchased gift cards or gift certificates of $10, all of which was refunded in statement credits. I then used the freebie gift certs at a later date.
And then there were other years where the offers were more lukewarm or not at all.
What a pleasure to see a new Shop Small offer – just at a time when your favorite local small businesses could REALLY use a boost (and so could you)!
You will see the Shop Small offer when you open the website or app, or you can use this LINK. Once you enroll (which you must do by July 26th), you’ll get a $5 statement credit every time you use your enrolled Card to make a single purchase of $10+ at a US business location on the Shop Small Map (or Online Directory) by September 9, 2020.
You can do this 10x, which means a total of $50 free for a minimum spend of $100.
Plus, it’s really fun to look at the map and list of your local shops, services and restaurants to see which ones participate. I noticed that the wine store on my corner is participating (aka Rose all Day for me?). So, does a local favorite mexican restaurant (their $15 margaritas just got less expensive!).

I note that I actually had this offer on all of my American Express cards, but once I accepted it on one card, I received a “sorry you already accepted this offer on another card” message when I tried to enroll the other cards. Except Bluebird. I manage my Bluebird card separately from my other American Express cards, so I was able to accept the Shop Small offer on that card as well. So, if you have a Bluebird card, check and see if you have the Shop Small offer there.
